Og the Ogre and the Nephilim races

“Tales that are True” series

In the land of Bashan, on the way from the Red Sea, there was a king whose name was Og and he was one of the giants. It was a land where the people were great and tall, and all the nations around trembled in fear, for they said: “Who can stand before the Anakim?”

His kingdom of giants was fearsome for they descended from the Nephilim races, the descendants of the fallen angels who had married the daughters of Man. It was a land that devoured its inhabitants, and the sons of Man were like mere grasshoppers in their sight...

For the angels who did not stay within their position of authority, but left their proper dwelling, had borne children to the daughters of Man. Thus, the Nephilim were on the Earth in those days, and also afterwards: These were the mighty men of old, the men of renown. They were the descendants of Anak, from whom came all the races of giants.

Such was Goliath, the Giant of Gath, whose height was three meters. He wore a helmet of bronze and a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was fifty-seven kilos. For Gath was a land of giants, who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot…

Among these races, were the Rephaim, of whom the last of the remnant was Og the king of Bashan, whose very name filled all nations with dread. Behold, he ruled from Rabbah of the Ammonites, and his bed, that was made of iron, was four meters in length and two meters in breadth. The people of the land of Bashan were as tall as the cedars and as strong as the oaks!

And the Lord God saw that the wickedness of Man was great in the Earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was Evil continually…

And just as God did not spare the angels who had sinned but had cast them down to Hell into chains of darkness, neither did He spare the ancient world but saved Noah, nor did He spare Sodom and Gomorrah, thus did He resolve to do to the races of giants that filled the land in those days.

And the lord God said to His people, the race of Man that had not corrupted its seed with the seed of the fallen angels: “Hear, O My people, you are to cross over the Jordan today, to go and dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourselves, who dwell in cities that are great and fortified up to Heaven. They are a people who are great and tall, the descendants of the Anakim.”

And the descendants of Man came to the Valley of Eshcol and saw a land of milk and honey, a land where nature was bountiful and where all manners of trees were producing giant fruit: pomegranates and figs and grapes. There, they cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes and they had to carry it on a pole between two of them.

But when they saw the giants, they cried out in fear and said to God: “Where are you sending us? Our hearts melt with terror for the people of the land are greater and taller than we! The cities are fortified up to Heaven! There, have we seen the Nephilim, the sons of the Anakim! All the people that we saw are of great height and they made us seem like grasshoppers. They devour the inhabitants of the land!”

And God said to His people: “Do you think that My hand is too short that I cannot deliver you from their hands? Go up for I will give you their land! Fear not: For I have delivered Og the Ogre into your hand, and all his people, and his land! For even though they are as high as the cedars, I will destroy their fruit above and their roots beneath…”

And Og the Ogre went out to battle the children of God, he and all his people, a mighty army of fearsome giants.

So, God said to him: “You consider yourself a lion of the nations, but you are like a dragon in the seas: For you trouble the waters with your feet and you foul the rivers. I will throw my net over you with a host of my people and they will haul you up in my dragnet!”

Thus, did the Lord God cause His people to gain victory over Og the Ogre and over his army of giants. And they prevailed over their enemies: Not by power nor by might, but by the Spirit of God, did they smite! For all who are the sons of God are led by the Spirit of God.

And all of the giants were slain: Now they bear their shame with those who went down to the Pit. Though their terror was caused in the land of the living, they are as those who are slain in the midst of seas. They do not lie with the mighty, for they have gone down to Hell with their weapons of war, and upon their bones is the Judgment of their iniquities…

Just as Og the Ogre and his might army of giants were destroyed by a people who seemed like grasshoppers in their sight, so it happened to the remnants of the Nephilim in times gone by. And the children of Man would recount the days of David the king, when he went to battle Goliath, the giant of Gath from whom all the men fled for they were dreadfully afraid. But David said to the giant: “Who is he, that he should defy the armies of the Living God?” So, he approached the giant with just a sling in his hand and five smooth stones that he kept in a shepherd’s bag. And when the giant saw him, he disdained him and said: “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And David replied: “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the Lord of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day, the Lord will deliver you into my hand!” And so it was, when the giant drew near, that David slung a stone and struck him in his forehead, so that he fell on his face to the earth… Thus, David had prevailed over the giant of Gath with just a sling and a stone!

Therefore, understand today that the Lord your God is He who goes before you as a consuming fire. It is not because of your righteousness that you possess the land, but because of the wickedness of the nations that the Lord your God drove out before you.

And this is how Og the Ogre, who was once a cup of trembling for all the nations, became a fairy-tale for the children of Man…
